In what has become an annual event met with great expectations, the Mothers® Shine Award at the 2003 SEMA Show in Las Vegas recognized yet
another superb example of automotive craftsmanship. This year’s winner was Stallion, a brilliant copper-colored ’34 Mercury Coupe owned
by Ron Whiteside of Scottsdale, Arizona.

In presenting the award on the SEMA show floor with TV cameras rolling and a large crowd of car enthusiasts in attendance,
Dennis Holloway of Mothers® noted that, “Each year it gets tougher to pick the best of the lot, and many other excellent cars
were in close contention.” In the final analysis, though, after close scrutiny by a panel of judges, the impeccably finished Stallion won by a nose.

“It’s a great honor,” Whiteside said when presented with the trophy. “I’m really glad to receive the Shine Award, c
onsidering the amount of work that went into the car.”
Built by Chip Foose of Foose Design over a period of more than six years, this astonishing street rod features a modified ’34 Ford Three-Window body
converted with Mercury badges and trim. The SAC frame runs on a chromed custom suspension, and rumbling under the hood is a Corvette LT-4 V8. “I wanted
it to handle like a Corvette, but look like a ’34,” explained Whiteside.
When accepting the Shine Award, Foose commented that, “It’s impressive to be pulled out of 1,000 or so cars on display at the SEMA.”
In keeping with Mothers® reputation for premium-quality car-care products, he feels the Shine Award is especially significant for recognizing the Stallion’s
dazzling finish.
A number of vehicles were in the running for the Shine Award, and earned Mothers® Choice Awards in recognition of their fine workmanship.
Last year’s Shine Award winners, Troy and Jack Trepanier of Rad Rides By Troy, were among the Mothers® Choice winners with their 1967 Ford
Mustang GT, the Fastlane Fastback, which was commissioned by eBay Motors for a charity auction.
Other Mothers® Choice vehicles included John Spar’s 1923 T Nostalgic Dragster, Rod Millen’s Lexus IS 430, John Babcock’s 1940
Mercury Lead Sled Custom, and a 1932 Ford Five Window Coupe owned by George Poteet.
Additional cars honored by the Mothers® Choice were a 1957 Chevrolet Lowrider built by Tim Rodriguez, a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air from Brent Du Pont of
Baer Racing, and a 2003 Porsche Patritti F1 from Patrick Nguyen of Patritti Rennsport Design.
Last but not least on the Mothers® Choice list were a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser with a trailer by Faye Lynn and Ray Newton of PTeazer, a 1953 Ford F-100
Panel UPS Truck built by Vince Coppola of McLaren Performance, a 2003 Honda Civic Si customized by Polk Audio, and a Spyder ZL71 Competition Offroad
Vehicle built by Clifton Slay. All of these award-winning vehicles represent the best of the builder’s art across a surprisingly wide range of vehicle types.
Mothers® Polishes•Waxes•Cleaners is known the world over for its premium-quality car care products. The company’s
Shine Award is widely regarded as the most prestigious honor to receive at SEMA, the premier event of the automotive aftermarket industry.
