In what has become a car builder s highest honor at the aftermarket industry event of the year, hundreds of exceptional rides were considered for the 10th annual Mothers® Shine Award. Held at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV, the Shine Award honors uncompromising excellence in vehicle design. The winner is decided upon by an international panel of respected members of the automotive industry, including journalists, seasoned hobbyists and past winners. Judging is based on overall appearance, fit and finish, attention to detail, integration of custom and stock elements, creative vision and execution of concept.

Hosting the ceremony this year were aftermarket industry veterans Joe Sebergandio and Will Handzel, and they presented the 2010 Shine Award to:

1970 Mustang Mach 1  Dragon. - Owned by Jayne Roorda and Jack Alex Stoner of Chandler, AZ, and built by Ringbrothers in Spring Green, WI. Drivetrain is a Roush 427 IR crate motor mated to a Tremec 5-speed transmission. Suspension is Detroit Speed QUADRAlink in the rear and JME in the front. Virtually every panel was modified or massaged, it also features Forgeline 3-piece wheels, Flowmaster mufflers, Royal Purple fluids, carbon fiber deck lid and custom billet throughout. Paint is BASF Glasurit in Dragon Blood and Castle Grey, and interior is by Upholstery Unlimited. http://ringbrothers.com

Mothers® Choice Award winner: 2011 Lexus LS 600 HL Hybrid, owned and built by Clark Ishihara of VIP Auto Salon

2011 Lexus LS 600 HL Hybrid - Owned and built by Clark Ishihara of VIP Auto Salon, Orange, CA. Paint is by PPG in a custom hue of macadamia and sprayed by Finish Line Auto Craft. Aero style package is by Wald. Time to build was 4-1/2 weeks. Drivetrain is the stock 600 HL, a 4.6-liter hybrid producing 480 hp. Other features include Wald Mahora MII wheels, a Performance Tube Systems exhaust, a custom interior, custom air suspension, 15-inch Brembo brakes, and Pirelli P Zero tires. The goal was to build a vehicle for the next generation of hybrid, expanding one area of detail with a green car by making a hybrid exciting and appealing to the young professionals. http://www.vipautosalon.com


Mothers® Choice Award winner: 1957 Chevrolet Pickup, owned and built by Rodger Lee of Ironworks Speed & Kustom

1957 Chevrolet Pickup - Owned and built by Rodger Lee of Ironworks Speed & Kustom, Bakersfield, CA. Rodger owned this pickup for 15 years before starting its current build which took two years. Drivetrain is Chevrolet LS V8 equipped with MSD Ignition, Comp Cams and FAST XFI electronic fuel injection system. It is mated to a 6-speed transmission and a C6 Corvette transaxle. This custom pickup also features a custom-fabricated fuel tank and exhaust, plus many billet items including pedals. Budnik wheels are wearing BFGoodrich rubber and stopped with custom Wilwood brakes. All air compressors and electrical controls for the Air Ride Technologies air suspension are tucked under the seat and are powered by Optima batteries. Cab is cooled by Vintage Air. There are numerous body modifications, including the rear window being lowered 1-1/2 inches. It is painted in DuPont black. http://ironworksspeedandkustom.com


Mothers® Choice Award winner: 2003 Infiniti G35 Coupe, owned and built by Randy Riggs

2003 Infiniti G35 Coupe - Owned and built by Randy Riggs in his Gardena, CA home. Custom paint by Estabon Pimentel at Auto Explosion in Gardena is Lamborghini Diablo orange with Murcielago yellow pearl over a custom wide body kit by Auto Explosion. Body and paint time was two months, and total build time was five years. Drivetrain is a Vortech-supercharged VQ35 3.5-liter V6, with custom billet pulleys and intake systems from Australia were port-matched and polished. This is the first G35 with 21-inch wheels. It also includes Recaro interior and many Japan domestic market parts with a custom sound system and PlayStation. A  home built custom, it was purchased new for his wife as a daily driver, and she provided input on the build. Inspiration for the build was to get his wife involved in his car hobby and to compete in shows together.


Mothers® Choice Award winner: 1949 Buick Fastback Sedanette, owned and built by Justin Hills of Hills and Co. Customs

1949 Buick Fastback Sedanette - Owned and built by Justin Hills of Hills and Co. Customs in Taree, New South Wales, Australia, it is Justin s personal car and is used as a rolling business card for his custom shop. Paint is BASF Glasurit straight jet black basecoat with a clearcoat. Body work was about 1,200 hours alone and features functional flipper windows, body channeled 1-inch over the chassis, peaked hood, slanted B-pillars, 3-inch chop on the roof, taillights moved, frenched headlights, and the trunk was sectioned and pie-cut. Only vintage pre-1950 parts and models were used. Interior is Manhattan leather and snakeskin. Build time was about 3,000 hours total. Drivetrain is an all-stock straight-8, all completely rebuilt and detailed. Suspension is by Air Ride Technologies. Mothers® Choice Award winner: 2011 HTR 850R Camaro Supercar, owned and built by Howard Tanner of Redline Motorsports

2011 HTR 850R Camaro Supercar - Owned and built by Howard Tanner of Redline Motorsports in Schenectady, NY. Paint is factory Summit White with stripes in blue PPG pearl over a DeNooyer body kit. This  supercar features a 427 Chevy with Kenny Bell supercharger, ZR1 Corvette dual disc clutch, RPM transmission, 1000-hp axles, PFADT suspension with coilovers and sway bars, Brembo 6-piston brakes and Forza wheels. Build time was 7 weeks, almost 24/7. Purpose of the build was to bridge a gap between the aftermarket and OE limited-edition vehicles. http://www.redline-motorsports.net


Mothers® Choice Award winner: 1939 Ford  GT Custom, owned by Cindy Warn and built by Tim Divers of Divers Street Rods

1939 Ford  GT Custom - Owned by Cindy Warn of Wilsonville, OR and built by Tim Divers of Divers Street Rods in Startup, WA. Paint is PPG on an all-steel Ford body. Drivetrain is a Ford GT 5.4-liter supercharged V8 mated to a Ford 4R100 4-speed automatic transmission and 9-inch Ford rear with a Strange Engineering center section. Chassis is a modified Morrison, and also features Wilwood brakes and one-off Schot wheels. Build time was 3-1/2 years, and it was originally built for the same customer 20 years ago and is now a 21st century rebuild using only 20% of the original car with the remaining 80% hand made. http://www.diversstreetrods.com

1967 Ford Mustang - Owned and built by Joe Brown of Hot Rod Joe s in Lafayette, LA. Powertrain is a 4.6-liter Supercharged Ford Mustang SVT Cobra V8 mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and Ford 9-inch rear end. Independent suspension and 3-inch exhaust are wrapped in a fully-fabricated tube chassis. The hand-fabricated underbody and wheel openings are complemented with a custom grille, hood, intercooler. Interior features a touch screen audio/visual system and stamped stainless steel speaker covers. Paint is butternut pearl and trim is brushed nickel. Mothers® Choice Award winner: 1946 Hudson Pickup, owned and built by Bob and Barbara Bruhn

1946 Hudson Pickup - Owned by Bob and Barbara Bruhn of Los Olivos, CA. Built in three years by Bob, in his garage, working on it almost full time. All work, including paint, was done by Bob, and the Hudson never left his garage during the build. The 508 cubic-inch big-block Chevy V8 has a GMC 8-71 blower with Hilborn Shotgun fuel-injection hidden in the blower bonnet. Transmission is a 4L80E with Gear Vendors overdrive mated to a Speedway Engineering quick-change rear end. The TCI chassis is riding on AccuAir air suspension. The cab was lengthened by 7 inches, the wheelbase was shortened 8 inches, and the bed was shortened by 18 inches and is painted in House of Kolor paints. Bob grafted Hudson coupe doors to fit the truck, the grille was all hand fabricated using wood prototypes, and the interior was all done by hand.


Mothers® Choice Award winner: 1965 Chevrolet Corvette, owned and built by Brent Jarvis of Performance Restorations

1965 Chevrolet Corvette - Owned and built by Brent Jarvis of Performance Restorations in Mundelein, IL. Paint is House of Kolor candy apple red over silver base with micro flake. Build time was nearly 4,000 hours over 3 years. Powertrain features an old-style 565 all-aluminum Chevy big block vintage road racing motor producing 900-horsepower and mated to a clutchless G-force 5-speed and all hand-built independent rear suspension. Fully-finished belly pans with full chrome moly tubing with the exception of the original center frame section. Driven 2,000 miles this past summer. http://www.performancerestorations.com


Mothers® Choice Award winner: 1959 Cadillac, owned by Lou Querisio and built by Todd Lewis at Xtreme Restorations

1959 Cadillac - Owned by Lou Querisio of Naples, FL, and built by Todd Lewis and his team at Xtreme Restorations in Slatersville, RI. Drivetrain is the original Cadillac 390 cubic-inch V8 with a tri-power mated to the original 4-speed automatic. A custom dual-quad exhaust provides quiet driving in the city and bypasses the mufflers on the highway. It has press-button start, and stopping power is provided by custom 4-wheel disc brakes sitting on an Air Ride Technologies suspension. All trim and interior was hand made, and it is painted in PPG Vibrance in Vanilla Shake and Soft Yellow hues. This custom Cadillac was built to replicate a GM concept car. Mothers® Choice Award winner: 1969 Ford Mustang Owned by Matt Lazich and built by Steve Strope s Pure Vision

1969 Ford Mustang - Owned by Matt Lazich of Anvil Carbon Fiber Products, El Segundo, CA and built by Steve Strope s Pure Vision in Simi Valley, CA. Paint is 2011 Range Rover Alaska White by PPG and laid by Mick Jenkens of Mick s Paint in Pomona, CA. Drivetrain is a John Kaase 520 cubic-inch  Boss 9 all-aluminum 429 making 805-horsepower on pump gas. Transmission is a 5-speed Tremec from a modern driveline and a Kevlar clutch. The owner found the car online two miles from his shop. It was built as a marketing tool for his carbon fiber business and integrates many carbon fiber features. Mothers® Choice Award winner: 1961 Mercedes 190 SL  Mercedes-Bent, owned by Richard Mott and built by Randy Clark of Hot Rods & Custom Stuff

1961 Mercedes 190 SL  Mercedes-Bent - Owned by Richard Mott of La Jolla, CA and built by Randy Clark of Hot Rods & Custom Stuff in Escondido, CA. This custom Mercedes has bridged the gap between old and new German engineering and features a 650-horsepower twin-turbocharged V12 with RENNtech performance upgrades. Painted in BASF Glasurit Elfenbein (ivory), the body is stretched and widened, and is set on a 2004 Mercedes 600 SL platform. Featuring billet aluminum bumpers and other pieces, the grille was milled from a single 450-pound block, and the custom 20 inch wheels feature a floating center cap. The trunk also has its own custom luggage. Plating was done by Sherm s Custom Plating. http://www.hotrodscustomstuff.com
